The Past
Peking University People¡¯s Hospital, originally named Central Hospital of China located at Fuchengmen, was established in 1918. It is the first comprehensive western medicine hospital built on funds raised solely by Chinese Government. Dr. Liande Wu, one of the founders of the Chinese Medical Association and a plague fighter, served as president of the hospital. Shortly after the event at Pearl Harbor in 1941, a group of renowed physicians and surgeons, including Dr. Huilan Zhong, Dr. Qiaozhi Lin, Dr. Songtao Guan, Dr. Yuanpu Xie and Dr. Jimao Meng, transferred to this hospital form Peking Union Medical College Hospital. They contributed greatly to the improvement of medical care and to teaching new generation physicians and nurses. Compassion and professionalism have since become the motto and tradition of this institution.
The hospital had been under direct supervision of the Chinese Ministry of Public Health since May 1950 and was subsequently renamed as Beijing People¡¯s Hospital in 1956. It became affiliated with the Beijing Medical College in 1958 and served as one of its major teaching hospitals since that time. In 1991, the hospital was rebuilt at the new site, a mile away from the old facility. A new research-teaching building was put into operation at the same location in 1997. When Beijing Medical University merged with Peking University in 2000, the hospital was renamed Peking University People¡¯s Hospital.
